Tracy Calder - Writer, Photographer & Interviewer, Storytelling for Creatives

My Story

After more than 20 years working in the photo magazine industry, I’ve learned that art can be a powerful way of communicating stories and enabling us to process complex emotions.

For eight years I worked at Outdoor Photography magazine (two as editor). During this time, I developed a passion for macro photography that led to an illustrated book (Close-up and Macro Photography) that has been translated into three languages. I later become Features & Technique editor at Amateur Photographer magazine, and still enjoy creating content for both these titles (among others).

Sharing the skills and insights I develop along my creative journey is important to me. As such, my words and images have appeared in more than 30 newspapers and magazines including The Guardian, The Independent and numerous photography titles. I have also contributed to online resources such as Elephant and Amateur Photographer magazine.

Regularly appearing as a speaker at the Photography Show has been a career highlight – my presentation on close-up photography received more than 1,200 views and ranked in the Top 10 most popular talks of 2020. Since 2017 I’ve been a tutor at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation in Sussex.

In 2018 I co-founded Close-up Photographer of the Year – a competition celebrating close-up, macro and micro photography – which has since received more than 40,000 entries from all around the world. Entrants have received coverage in many high-profile newspapers and websites including Metro, Bored Panda and The Daily Telegraph.

Noticing an opportunity to serve the artistic community, I started writing a fortnightly ‘Letter to Creatives’, which now has more than 5k subscribers.

In 2022, my close-up series Plant Scars was awarded a Gold medal by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and exhibited at Saatchi Gallery. Previous photographic work has appeared at The National Portrait Gallery, The Photographers’ Gallery and the Royal Geographical Society.

Prior to my photographic career, I achieved a First-Class Honours degree in Media with Cultural Studies at Southampton Institute. Outside of work, I’m a massive yoga enthusiast!
