Speaking

On the Subject of Creativity

Establishing and maintaining a creative practice isn’t easy. The same obstacles threaten to derail you time and again: limited time and/or finances, fear of failure, an inability to define your style, nervousness when it comes to promoting your work etc.

But creativity matters. It enriches your life and helps you to navigate the world. It allows you to discover who you are and how you feel. What’s more, when you bring your ideas to life it connects you to others, and to the very experience of being human.

Using knowledge (and stories) gathered from hundreds of creatives, I deliver a series of talks offering simple, actionable advice to help anyone facing creative barriers. The talks can be customised or built from the ground up.

On the Subject of Close-Up Photography

Close-up photography is akin to magic. Looking at something up close ignites feelings of curiosity and wonder that many of us haven’t felt since childhood.

But close-up and macro photography can be challenging – poor light, soft focus and subject movement can all threaten to ruin a perfectly composed picture. Even with these aspects mastered, there’s still limited depth of field, distracting backgrounds and minimum focusing distances to contend with.

Having co-founded Close-up Photographer of the Year – a competition celebrating close-up, macro and micro photography – six years ago I’m familiar with the common mistakes people make in this area, and I deliver lively illustrated talks with simple, actionable advice to overcome them.
