Portraits, Purpose and Parenthood: Life Behind the Lens with Harry Borden

Portrait photographer Harry Borden has won numerous high-profile awards and captured everyone from Keir Starmer to the Spice Girls, but it's the photographs of his children and his role as a father that he cherishes the most.

In this episode he shares the two questions you should ask yourself before starting a long-term project, how running a YouTube channel has deepened his relationship with his son, Fred, and why blasting The Stone Roses out of your car window is the best way to enliven a trip to Lidl.

‘I kind of bowl into a situation, and by force of personality, in a matter of a minute, I can sell myself and convince people I'm somebody to be reckoned with.’ – Harry Borden

For Episode 9 of We Need to Make Things I chat with Harry Borden @harryborden about the two questions he asks himself before starting a project, how five minutes with Keir Starmer turned into a trip to Rome, the time he was a complete idiot and how hosting a YouTube channel has deepened his relationship with his son, Fred, among many other things!

Harry Borden is one of the UK’s finest portrait photographers. His work has appeared in titles such as The New Yorker, Vogue and Time. He has won numerous awards, and his first solo exhibition was held at the National Portrait Gallery in 2005. The Gallery currently holds more than a 100 of Harry’s prints in its permanent collection. His first book, Survivor: A Portrait of the Survivors of the Holocaust was published in 2017 and has since been followed by the books Single Dad and On Divorce. When he’s not taking pictures of celebrities or working on long-term photo projects, Harry hosts a popular YouTube channel, @fredandharryborden, with his son.

This episode is full of Harry’s wonderful wisdom including:

👉 The two questions you should ask yourself before starting a long-term project
👉 What he wishes colleges and schools would tell their photography students
👉 How positive morning habits can improve your physical (and mental) wellbeing
👉 What he would do differently if he met the members of Primal Scream again

Enjoy!
